Border Minor Hockey’s 8th Annual Golf Tournament, one of the only two major fundraisers for the club, took place on August 16th under cloudy skies at the Dufferin Heights Golf Club. Organizers were a little unhappy with the results as only ten teams played in the end and few people attended the dinner and dance, held after the tournament. “The turnout was disappointing but those who went had a good time. We’d like to thank all the businesses who donated for hole sponsorships and door prizes and the teams who took part,” said Emily Johnston, the vice-president of the league.
The hockey season will begin with a couple of free skates for young children who would like to try skating. “Anyone interested can come out on the ice and give it a try. Some people think if their child can’t skate then they can’t play hockey. But our coaches are there to teach the young ones how to skate,” explained Emily. The free skates will take place at the Pat Burns Arena on September 6th, 13th, and 20th, at 9:00 am each morning, and will last fifty minutes.
The hockey association is also in need of referees and scorekeepers. Anyone interested in earning a little extra money as a referee or scorekeeper during the hockey season, as long as they are 13 years old or older, is welcome to contact the club for more details. Those interested must take a oneday course in Sherbrooke for which they are reimbursed after working a certain number of games (about 10).
