Tough Training Camp Brings Out Top Bishop’s Golfers
Trainingcamp was something that was not in the Bishop’s University Golf Team’s vocabulary prior to 2014. That changed last week when 12 men and three women traveled to Jay Peak Resort in Vermont for three days. The team fundraised for the better part of two years to make the event possible. Now they look ahead to their first RSEQ tournament slated for Aug. 26-27 at Club de Golf Gatineau, hosted by the University of Quebec at Outaouais.
Traveling to Gatineau will be nine players in total. Five men will make up the Bishop’s University squad competing while one will play as an individual and the three women will carry the torch for the Lady Gaiters.
The men’s side will have quite the different look to it than 2013 as three of the five players are newcomers. James Huxham (Beaconsfield, Que.), Martin St-Pierre (Sherbrooke, Que.) and Brad Walsh (Stittsville, Ont.) will all put on the purple and white golf shirts for the first time while veterans Jake Sterio (Toronto) and Spencer Richmond (Perth, Ont.) are back. Patrick D’Amour (Saint-Lazarre, Que.) is the individual for the event, also a first timer.
On the women’s side two-time reigning team MVP Shannon Lee Greenshields (Pincourt, Que.) is back after finishing in solo seventh in the RSEQ a year ago and earning an invite to the Canadian University Championships in Winnipeg. Third-year players Lindsay Reid (Beaconsfield) and Jaymie Tucker (Victoria, B.C.) will join Greenshields as the Gaiters look to go low and move up the standings.
“I think that training camp was very positive,” said Marty Rourke, the Gaiters head coach. “The team came together, we had some fun events as well as some serious
rounds of golf on a very challenging course. After playing Jay Peak I think everyone our team is eager to get back at it and work hard. I’m really happy with who we have going to Gatineau and am excited to see what the scores will be at our first tournament. I think we have a great group of players from top to bottom and we’re moving in the right direction.”
The Gaiters golf team will head to Gatineau on Monday for a practice round at Club de Golf Gatineau prior to their first RSEQ tournament of the year slated for Tuesday, Aug. 26 and Wednesday, Aug. 27. Follow the gaiters progress anytime at www. gaiters.ca or on Twitter (@BishopsGaiters).
