Goodrich Memorial Library presents
Dartmouth Professor Shares Story of New Hampshire’s World War II POW Camp October 1, 2014 7 p.m. at the Goodrich Memorial Library.
First program of the season for Vermont Humanities Council’s 1st Wednesdays free lecture series at Newport’s Goodrich Memorial Library: Historian and Dartmouth College Professor Allen Koop will tell the story of Camp Stark, New Hampshire’s only World War II prisoner-of-war camp for German soldiers, in a talk at Goodrich Memorial Library in Newport. The talk, “Stark Decency: German POWs in a New England Village,” is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series and is free and open to the public.
Dr. Koop will tell a little-known New England story that reveals greater themes of human dignity and integrity. He will share how prisoners, guards, and ordinary people in the tiny northern village of Stark allowed human decency to turn the bitter division of war into a camaraderie that culminated forty years later in a unique reunion where the camp once stood.
Koop lectures in the History Department at Dartmouth College, primarily on 20th century European history and on the American
health care system. He graduated from Dartmouth College and then earned his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania.
The Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays series is held on the first Wednesday of every month from October through May in nine communities statewide, featuring speakers of national and regional renown. Talks in Newport are held at Goodrich Memorial Library. All First Wednesdays talks are free and open to the public.
Upcoming Newport talks include ‘‘Amelia’’ with Champlain College professor Nancy Nahra on November 5; ‘‘The Soldier’s Pen: Letters from the Civil War Battlefront’’ with Dartmouth History professor Robert Bonner on December 3; and ‘‘The Examined Life’’ with philosophy scholar Susanne Claxton on January 7.
The Vermont Department of Libraries is the statewide underwriter of First Wednesdays. Goodrich Memorial Library is sponsored by Community National Bank, Bill and Nancy Cook, and Newport Renaissance Corporation.
