Bede Boots His Way Past The Gaiters

Laval­kicker Boris Bede was 8-for-8 on field goal at­tempts en route to a 72-15 Rouge et Or vic­tory over the Bishop’s Gaiters in their home opener of the 2014 RSEQ Univer­sity Foot­ball sea­son on Satur­day.

For Bishop’s high­lights came early as they grabbed an 8-7 lead in front of the pur­ple faith­ful. Run­ning back Ron­lee King-Fileen (Toronto) scored the Gaiters first touch­down half­way through the first quar­ter on a seven-yard swing pass from quar­ter­back Shane McDon­ald (Uxbridge, Ont.). McDon­ald later con­nected with fifth-year re­ceiver Nathan Heather (Oro­mocto, N.B.) 2:03 into the sec­ond frame to give the Gaiters life as they cut the vis­i­tors lead to 18-15 at the time. This came after Bede (Toulon, France) con­nected on his first three field goals of the day.

Laval ex­ploded for 28 sec­ond quar­ter points and grabbed a 43-15 half­time lead. In the sec­ond half the two-time de­fend­ing Vanier Cup cham­pi­ons and na­tion’s top team rolled to a 72-15 vic­tory.

Bede’s eight suc­cess­ful field goals is a CIS record for a non-over­time game. He con­nected on at­tempts of 15 and 25 yards in the first quar­ter; 21, 28, 37 and 38 in the sec­ond stanza; he added a 28 yarder in the third and 15 yarder to open the fourth. His 32 to­tal points is the eighth most ever in a sin­gle game. The rest of his scor­ing came on six con­verts and a pair of rouges. He also av­er­aged 55.8 yards on five punts.

McDon­ald fin­ished the game 16-for-31 for 231 yards, two touch­down passes and two in­ter­cep­tions. Heather caught four passes for 96 yards and the ma­jor while King-Fileen fin­ished with 54 rush­ing yards and 29 re­ceiv­ing yards and a touch­down.
