Gaiters Lacrosse And Rugby Roll Through Week­end

TheBishop’s Gaiters men’s rugby team moved into a tie for first place in the RSEQ Univer­sity con­fer­ence after a 27-14 vic­tory over the Con­cor­dia Stingers on Fri­day night in Len­noxvlle. The men’s lacrosse squad rolled through a pair of games with the Car­leton Ravens and locked up sec­ond place in the CULFA East. The women’s soc­cer team’s sea­son came to an end with a pair of losses at Laval and at Mon­treal and the men’s bas­ket­ball team com­peted in a trio of ex­hi­bi­tion games to com­plete a busy week­end for Gaiter ath­let­ics.

The Bishop’s men’s rugby team hosted the first-place Con­cor­dia Stingers on Fri­day night. After a quiet start the Gaiters were able to get on the score­board first thanks to a Ni­co­las Charl­ton (Mon­treal, Que.) penalty kick. Charl­ton fin­ished the night with two suc­cess­ful penal­ties on two at­tempts and was a per­fect 3-for-3 on con­ver­sions. Bishop’s grabbed a 13-7 half­time lead. They ex­tended it to 27-7 be­fore weath­er­ing a Con­cor­dia storm and earn­ing a 27-14 vic­tory. Max Grou­ette (Sur­rey, B.C.), Lee Hud­son (Sut­ton, Que.) and Max Fer­land (St. Lam­bert, Que.) scored tries for the pur­ple who im­prove their record to 4-1-1 (21 points) while Con­cor­dia falls to 4-2-1 (21 points). The Gaiters and Stingers are tied at the top of the stand­ings hav­ing each beaten one another by 13 points. McGill sits right be­hind with a 3-1-2 record (19 points). Bishop’s and McGill each have two games re­main­ing while Con­cor­dia has just one.

The men’s lacrosse team wrapped up their 2014 CUFLA East reg­u­lar sea­son cam­paign with a pair of wins over the Car­leton Ravens. On Satur­day in the na­tion’s cap­i­tal Bishop’s used a strong sec­ond half to pull away to a 14-6 vic­tory. They backed that up 18 hours later with a con­vinc­ing 12-2 win on Coul­ter Field. Bishop’s ends the 2014 reg­u­lar sea­son with a 10-2 record mean­ing they will host the Trent Ex­cal­ibur in the CUFLA East play­off round. That game is slated for Satur­day, Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m. on Coul­ter Field with a ticket to the 2014 Bag­gat­away Cup Cham­pi­onships on the line.

The Gaiters women’s soc­cer team closed out their 2014 sea­son on the road. On Fri­day night they were in Que­bec City to face the No. 3 Laval Rouge et Or. The hosts came out on top 7-0. On Sun­day it was a date with the No. 9 ranked Mon­treal Cara­bins. Mon­treal took con­trol early and went onto a 6-0 win. The Gaiters fin­ish the 2014 RSEQ year with a 1-12-1 record.
