Bishop’s University Celebrates
Global Entrepreneurship Week
For the third consecutive year, Bishop’s University will participate in Global Entrepreneurship Week, an event in which 24,000 post-secondary schools in over 140 countries participate. The event runs from November 17 through the 21st. This year, Bishop’s is one of just 10 post-secondary schools in Canada (and the only one in Quebec) who received the Unleash Your Inner Entrepreneur grant which helps fund and market GEW on campus.
Rylan Schwarze, the president of Enactus Bishop’s, expressed delight at the news: ‘‘We’re so excited and proud to have our proposal recognized by Futurpreneur Canada and Enactus Canada. The organizing committee for Global Entrepreneurship Week is very passionate about the event and we’re working hard to get more students than ever before in putting their entrepreneurial thinking caps on and turning their talents and dreams into businesses.’’
Professor Steve Karpenko of the Williams School of Business, who is helping the students with orga- nizing GEW, explains the week-long event: ‘‘This student-run initiative seeks to empower students from all departments across campus by giving them the confidence and knowledge they need to start their own business. Students are encouraged to identify their passion or talent into a sustainable business but might not have all the resources and knowledge they need in order to do so.’’
This award is the latest in a series of nods to Bishop’s excellence in teaching and mentoring entrepreneurship in 2014. Just a week ago, a group of business students returned from Beijing, China, for the Enactus World Cup, where they observed teams from around the world compete for the ultimate prize in entrepreneurship excellence. They hope to represent Canada in the near future.
The Executive Director of the Dobson-Lagassé Entrepreneurship Centre, David Monty, who has played a supportive role to the students, says: ‘‘Once again, Bishop’s students have been recognized for their incredible potential. Their success this year is a testament to the outstanding business and entrepreneurship programs Bishop’s offers to its students. I am very confident that our students will soar to new heights and represent Bishop’s on the international stage sooner than later.’’
