Stanstead Journal - - SPORTS - Lennoxville, Sherbrooke

Bishop’sGaiters captain Nicolas Charlton converted a Gaiters try in the final minutes of their final regularseason contest against the McGill Redmen on Friday night in Sherbrooke. The result, a 15-13 win, gave Bishop’s their first victory since 2003 against the eight-time defending champions. It also ensured a rematch in the semi-final on Saturday, Nov. 15, back on Coulter Field. Also on Friday night the men’s lacrosse team lost their opening round game at the Baggataway Cup to end their 2014 campaign. On Saturday the men’s and women’s basketball teams open their regular seasons at McGill. The women lost but the men beat the Redmen in dramatic finish.

McGill was the first team to heat up on the frigid night on Coulter Field. They grabbed an 8-0 lead before Charlton (Montreal) booted a penalty through to cut the lead to 8-3 right before halftime. Bishop’s tied the game up just over 10 minutes into the second half, however McGill responded five minutes later. The Redmen held a 13-8 advantage as time ticked away. A late Bishop’s try by Lee Hudson (Sutton, Que.) tied the score and set the stage for Charlton who made no mistake and lifted the Gaiters to the victory and a 4-0-0 record on home soil in 2014.

Also on Friday night Concordia topped Montreal 26-15 to claim first overall meaning the Gaiters finish in second and will host the Redmen on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. on Coulter Field. Montreal will face Concordia in the other RSEQ semi-final.

The men’s lacrosse team saw their season come to a pre-mature end on Friday night in Oshawa, Ontario at the 2014 Baggataway Cup. A fourth quarter surge by Guelph propelled the defending champions to a 13-9 win over the Gaiters. It was the second consecutive year Guelph knocked the Gaiters out of the championships in the quarterfinal. As in 2013 Guelph went on to claim vic- tories on Saturday over Brock and Sunday over McGill and repeat as champions. Basketball Bishop’s – 39 / McGill – 67

Leading scorers for the Lady Gaiters were Valerie Tremblay (St. Hubert, Que.) with 9 points and 2 rebounds and Noemie HamelPetit (Magog, Que.) with 9 points and 6 rebounds. Bishop’s – 60 / McGill – 59

The Gaiters took the lead in the last twelve seconds with a three from Majid Naji (Lunel, France), which put them up by one. McGill could not find the net in the dying seconds of the fourth frame, as the Gaiters came up with the 60-59 win.

Leading scorers for the Gaiters were Naji with 13 points and 2 rebounds and Kyle Desmarais (Montreal) with 13 points and 3 rebounds.

“I am really pleased with how hard our guys played tonight in a physical game. We did not quit when we got down and literally battled until the final second,” said head coach Rod Gilpin. “It was a collective effort. Everyone struggled at times, but everyone also stepped up at key times in the game when we needed them. It is nice to get that first win.”
