Santa's coming to Stanstead
The town of Stanstead is hosting its “Downtown Christmas Celebration”, this Saturday, and organizers have made some interesting changes to the day’s schedule. The community tree decorating and lighting will kick off the event at 9:30 in the morning at Henry Seth Taylor Place, and the live Nativity Scene, organized by United Church Minister Lise Kuzminska, will also take place in the morning, 9:45 am, and at a new location in front of Place Del Monty. “We have a new Children’s Choir, directed by Lise Flanders, and they will be there singing, too,” said Marise Trepanier, Stanstead’s recreation coordinator.
The Christmas Market is returning, this time to the second floor of Place Del Monty, so shoppers should enter the building through the front door located on Dufferin Street. It will showcase the products of about twenty local artisans and gourmet food producers: honey products, maple products, jewelry, stained glass, handmade soap and candles, knitted items, sourdough bread, olive oil, and bison products. “We’ll also have lots of homebaked desserts, jams and jellies, fresh fir wreaths, Christmas ornaments, pottery and birdhouses,” added Beverly Goodsell, one of the organizers of the Market. Jardin-desFrontieres students will also be selling crafts there.
Live music will be featured on the second floor of Place Del Monty during the Market, beginning with Donald Patriquin and his keyboard in the morning. Mike Goudreau will perform from noon to 1:00 pm, and Lise Flanders will sing after Mike until 2:00, when Mr. Patriquin will return to play Christmas music. The teens from the Stanstead Youth Centre will run a café for shoppers taking a break or those wanting to relax and listen to the music over coffee or hot chocolate.
Santa will arrive at Place del Monty at 2:00 and will stay until 4:00 to give out toys and candy canes and listen to Christmas Wish lists.
There’s even more going on in the downtown Rock Island sector as part of this holiday celebration. There is a free art exhibit at the Moose Gallery across from Place del Monty, featuring the art of Gabriel Safdie and Marcel Hauben. At Granit Central, residents of Stanstead can take a free tour if accompanied by a child. Miniature train enthusiasts will be there to run the fascinating miniature train exhibit.
Beginning at noon, Pizzeria Steve will sell hotdogs and slices of pizza at special prices while giving away free, hot apple cider. A Christmas supper will take place at Café Bar Sans Frontieres but reservations must be made by calling 819 876-5633.
