Strong Sec­ond Half Leads No.4 Martlets Past Gaiters Satur­day; Stingers Top Gaiters Fri­day

Don­ningth­eir pink uni­forms in their an­nual Shoot for the Cure event, the Bishop’s Gaiters women’s bas­ket­ball team was poised to pull off the big­gest up­set of the year on Satur­day night. They led the fourth-ranked McGill Martlets by two at half­time be­fore the three-time de­fend­ing RSEQ cham­pi­ons scored 19 points in each of the fi­nal two frames for a 51-34 victory.

The loss was the sec­ond one of the week­end for the Gaiters as Bishop’s fell 67-46 to Con­cor­dia on Fri­day night.

Lo­cal rookie Noemie Hamel-Pe­tit (Ma­gog, Que.) once again led the way for Bishop’s on Fri­day night against the Stingers. She scored nine points and grabbed four re­bounds in 30 min­utes of play­ing time. Point guard Edith Noble­cilla (Quito, Ecuador) added eight points and had a team-lead­ing 12 re­bounds in the los­ing cause.

On Satur­day in pink cap­tain Dani Lum­ley (Sher­brooke, Que.) was the leader in the Gaiters ef­fort. She scored eight points, grabbed eight re­bounds, had two steals and a block in 36 min­utes. A slow start to the con­test saw the game tied at four af­ter the first frame as nei­ther team was able to find suc­cess in the of­fen­sive end. Bishop’s outscored McGill 11-9 in the sec­ond frame and took their first half­time lead of the sea­son into the break. The Martlets found their form in the third quar­ter, outscor­ing Bishop’s 19-4 in the frame and 19-15 in the fi­nal quar­ter to earn the 51-34 win.

The loss drops Bishop’s to 0-14 on the year. They have two games re­main­ing, both at home in Mitchell Gym. Their next con­test if Satur­day, Fe­bru­ary 21 against Laval at 6 p.m. and they will close out the sea­son on Satur­day, Fe­bru­ary 28 at 6 p.m. when UQAM is in town.

The other four RSEQ teams McGill (12-1), UQAM (10-3), Laval (6-7) and Con­cor­dia (5-8) all re­turn Lennoxville for the RSEQ Fi­nal-4 set to take place from March 5-7 in Mitchell Gym.
