Stanstead Journal - - FORUM - Victoria Vanier

Atthe last Memphremagog MRC meeting, held on February 18th, local mayoars began revising the new Plan d action en en ironne ent which will run from 2015 to 2020.

The last five year plan consisted of 57 actions, grouped under six themes: water, surface, underground and potable; air, climate change; soil, erosion and contamination; forest, fauna and forest environment; uses, septic installations, agriculture, quarries, regional park, waste materials; and natural heritage, landscapes.

The o ite consultati e en de elo e ent durable (CCDD) was mandated by the council of mayors to assure the following of the 2011-2015 Action Plan. Lisette Maille, the president of the CCDD and the mayor of Austin is satisfied with the work that was accomplished: “Initiatives have been put in place for each of the 57 actions in the plan. I’m thinking for example of the sample program of tributaries that was started in 1998 and better equips municipalities to protect their water. Year after year, the report is positive. It’s thanks in large part to the collaboration of the municipalities, MRC committees, different associations who work to protect our environment, COGESAF and the QuebecVermont committee. Without them, it would have been impossible to carry out many of the actions in the plan.”

The process to revise the new five-year plan began with a workshop on the important principles of sustainable development and their applications. The public will be invited to contribute to these steps during the spring, mostly on the website of the MRC. If you’d like more information about this process you can subscribe to the MRC’s info-letter by visiting their website.
