New Com­mu­nity Out­reach Event Dur­ing Re­search Week At Bishop’s Univer­sity

Bishop’s Univer­sity’s 10th An­nual Re­search Week will take place next week, from March 23rd through the 28th. To high­light this spe­cial an­niver­sary and cel­e­brate the im­por­tant re­search be­ing done by Bishop’s Univer­sity fac­ulty and li­brar­i­ans, this year’s edi­tion of Re­search Week in­tro­duces a new event open to the Len­noxville com­mu­nity. Wed­nes­day, March 25, 7 pm Brû­lerie de café FARO, 112 Queen Street, Len­noxville Café Sci­en­tifique: Why is it so dif­fi­cult to kick an ad­dic­tion?

Cig­a­rette ad­dic­tion. Al­co­hol ad­dic­tion. Drug ad­dic­tion. These are is­sues that span all age groups and af­fect one’s fam­ily life, pro­fes­sional/stu­dent life and so­cial life. Bishop’s Univer­sity is bring­ing its re­search ex­per­tise in this field to Len­noxville and en­gag­ing with com­mu­nity mem­bers in a dis­cus­sion on the var­i­ous fac­tors that can in­flu­ence quit­ting smok­ing/ drink­ing/us­ing.

In this first edi­tion of the Bishop’s Univer­sity Café sci­en­tifique se­ries, Bishop’s pro­fes­sors Dr. Adri­anna Men­drek and Dr. An­nie Duch­esne will share their re­search ex­per­tise on the neu­ro­bi­o­log­i­cal and psy­choso­cial fac­tors that in­flu­ence a per­son’s abil­ity to kick an ad­dic­tion, on how a per­son’s gen­der can make a dif­fer­ence when try­ing to quit an ad­dic­tive sub­stance and on how stress can im­pact this process.

Ev­ery­one in the com­mu­nity is in­vited to take part in this in­for­mal dis­cus­sion, held at the Brû­lerie de café FARO on Queen Street, in Len­noxville, to en­joy a cof­fee and talk. In­di­vid­u­als will be en­cour­aged to in­ter­act with the re­searchers and bring their ques­tions and com­ments to the floor. No sci­en­tific knowl­edge is re­quired to par­tic­i­pate: just cu­rios­ity in how the hu­man body and mind work and an in­ter­est in the sub­ject mat­ter.

Mon­day, March 23: 10th An­niver­sary Cel­e­bra­tion, Launch of ACFAS Re­search Pho­tog­ra­phy Ex­hi­bi­tion and In­sti­tu­tional Repos­i­tory (Li­brary, 12:30 p.m.)

As a re­sult of a part­ner­ship agree­ment signed by Bishop’s Univer­sity and the As­so­ci­a­tion fran­co­phone pour le savoir (ACFAS), Bishop’s is proud to host the ACFAS pho­tog­ra­phy ex­hibit La Preuve par l’im­age. All are in­vited to come ad­mire these stun­ning im­ages cre­ated from sci­en­tific re­search, which will be dis­played in the li­brary un­til April 3rd. Thurs­day, March 26: Clos­ing Re­cep­tion (12:00 p.m., Cen­ten­nial Lobby)

The win­ner of this year’s Emerg­ing Scholar Award will be an­nounced, as well as the win­ners of the Stu­dent Poster Com­pe­ti­tion, of the Scav­enger Hunt and of the MUS­CLE award.
