2015 Baggataway Cup Bishop’s Bound
TheCanadian University Field Lacrosse Association (CUFLA) Championship, better known as the Baggataway Cup is headed to Bishop’s University in November 2015. The announcement came earlier this month at the CUFLA Annual General Meeting. On the heels of a successful 2015 RSEQ Final-4 Basketball Championships hosted at Bishop’s University, the Department of Athletics and Gaiters’ General Manager Drew Pollock are pleased to announce that CUFLA’s best teams will compete for the Baggatway Cup from November 6-8, 2015 on the Bishop’s University campus.
The 2015 event will mark the second time the championship will take place in Lennoxville; the first was in 2004 when the Brock Badgers beat the Gaiters in the final.
“It is no secret that we are one of the best travel teams in CUFLA,” said Pollock. “We have a huge amount of support from parents, fans and alumni wherever we go. This is a unique opportunity for us to gather all the parents, alumni and fans that travel to watch us with the strong student support we get for home games. I think it’s going to be a very exciting atmosphere.” Coulter Field will be the setting for the three-day event that guarantees the hosts a spot in the annual tournament. “The automatic entry only gets us the bye to the quarterfinals whereas winning the eastern conference would take us right to the semi-finals,” Pollock added. “This is the goal every year and it doesn’t change in 2015 just because we are hosting.”
The successful bid was a collaboration between the Gaiters Lacrosse team, the Bishop’s University Department of Athletics and the City of Sherbrooke led by Destination Sherbrooke. Local residents will have the privilege of enjoying the best lacrosse showcase in Quebec as the top collegiate programs from across Quebec and Ontario will compete for the right to be named 2015 champions.
Bishop’s has qualified for the Baggataway Cup the last five years, however has lost in the first round in each of the last three after claiming their one and only championship in 2011.
