Get Free trees this weekend
To celebrate Tree Day coming up on May 30th, Memphremagog Conservation Inc. will be giving away 2,400 trees at three different locations over the weekend. We cannot survive without trees: they absorb the carbon dioxide in the air and give off the oxygen that keeps us alive; trees help to keep the earth cool and they moderate the earth’s rainfall; and many life-saving drugs have active ingredients that come from trees. Every day, we either use or eat something that came from a tree, and trees provide food, shelter and water to many other animals and organisms as well. On average, one deciduous tree will absorb ten kilograms of carbon dioxide a year.
With this distribution of trees, MCI would like to encourage people to re-plant, preserve existing forests and promote the importance of trees and forests. Protecting our forests has several objectives: habitat protection; landscape protection; soil conservation; maintaining biodiversity, climate regulation; carbon sequestration; and the protection of lake water quality. The types of trees available are: Yellow Birch, Cherry, Red Oak, Burr Oak, Sugar Maple, White Pine, Red Pine, White Spruce and Larch.
The trees will be available at the following locations: Austin, May 30th, 9:00 am to noon, Depanneur Marché Austin; Stanstead Township, May 30th, 9:00 am to noon, Forand Park in Fitch Bay; and in Magog, May 31, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, Interpretation Centre of Cherry River marsh.
