Next Step Completed on Sunnyside Playground

Stanstead Journal - - FRONT PAGE - Steve Weary, Special collaboration Stanstead

On Saturday May 30th, over 30 volunteer parents, staff and community members came out to help install the new equipment in the Sunnyside Playground. Over the past many years the Sunnyside community has raised over $25,000 to renew the playground. The school has received supporting grants for both the Eastern Townships School Board and the Ministry of Education which totaled enough to do some significant landscaping and to buy three new structures: a multiactivity exercise module, a set of swings and a slide.

Bright and early on Saturday the team arrived and got to work removing the old structures, excavating the ground, and the complex job of assembling all the parts. By noon we had most of the pieces together, and by 4 pm they were in the ground. It still took until after 7 pm before the protective mulch was laid and the playground was ready for children to play.

Monday morning there was plenty of excitement at school and the students were lined up to play on the new module at lunch time. A big thank-you to all the people who volunteered their time, work, equipment, supplies and pizza to make the Sunnyside playground another step closer to being done. In the coming weeks we will finish the Nature Circle and the Meeting Circle areas and plant dozens more trees in the fall.

Sunnyside students (top) had fun trying out the cool new playground equipment on Monday after volunteers worked in Saturday’s extreme heat (below) to install it all.
