Choromondo con­cert com­ing up

TheChoromondo World Mu­sic Women’s Choir, di­rected by Al­lyna Harris, will be per­form­ing their 16th an­nual ben­e­fit con­certs this Fri­day, at Beu­lah United Church in Ayer’s Cliff, and on Satur­day at the Water­ville United Church. “We al­ways have be­tween twenty and twenty-five mem­bers. Some have been in the choir for four­teen years while oth­ers are just start­ing. The women are from all around the area, we even have eight mem­bers from Ver­mont,” said the choir’s founder, Al­lyna Harris.

The con­certs will in­clude songs from Bulgaria, Croa­tia, Ser­bia, East and West Africa, France, Is­rael and a cou­ple of spe­cial num­bers that will be ac­com­pa­nied by pi­ano. “We’ll be per­form­ing a spe­cial piece by com­poser Eric Whi­tacre and we’ll be ac­com­pa­nied by a teenage pi­ano player, Ni­cola Trem­blay, one of my ad­vanced stu­dents.” Ms. Harris will also per­form one song on the pi­ano.

Pro­ceeds from these an­nual fundrais­ers will, this year, go to two causes: the L’Es­cale women’s shel­ter in the Estrie, and the To­nen­bee Pro­ject which pro­vides so­lar cook­ers to the Kithuia Vil­lage in Kenya, where fire­wood for cook­ing is scarce. “We have a con­cert com­mit­tee that se­lects the projects ev­ery year that we will sup­port,” said the choir’s di­rec­tor.

The Choromondo con­certs take place Fri­day, June 19 at 7:30 pm at Beu­lah United Church, 967 Main Street, Ayer’s Cliff and Satur­day, June 20 at 7:30 pm at Water­ville United Church, 460 rue Prin­ci­pale sud, Water­ville.
