Border -Fest will need adjustment

Although the Border Fest parade and the fireworks in the evening were very popular, the main event at the Ball Park was not as well attended as in past years. “There was a low turnout on site which was unfortunate because that’s where we make our money,” said Stanstead’s recreation coordinator Marise Trepanier.

Selling beer to patrons on site helps the organizers pay for the extras at the event, like the live music and the wrestling show, so good attendance, and the willingness to pay a little extra for your beer, will make or break this annual community party.

“There were lots of people for the bingo, and the wrestling was really great and everyone enjoyed it. The volunteers from the Caisse Desjardins ran the ‘Washer toss’ which people also seemed to enjoy,” added Marise. Another new game that people had fun playing was the politically incorrectly named ‘Newfie Golf’!

There was a charge, this time, for the inflatable children’s games, put down to $2 from $3 at the last minute after hearing some concerns from people with children. The organizers of the event were trying to raise money for the long-awaited Stanstead water park, now eight years in the planning. $23,000 has been raised over the years for the over $100,000 project. “We were able to raise around $800 for the water park, some people even donating extra money for it,” said Ms. Trepanier.

“The parade went great,” said organizer Nickolas Wood. The registration of floats before the parade went well and people were much more polite when faced with the road closures. “Magog Ford came to be in the parade and they had the best set up; they brought all blue and white cars,” said Mr. Wood. The only challenge this year was finding volunteers to help with the parade. “I had to call a lot of people at the last minute and beg them to help out,” added Nickolas who admitted that if he can’t find some serious help for next year’s parade, he’s quitting.

Thankfully the fireworks went off without incident, since most of the Stanstead firefighters were at the fire station in between fire calls while they lit up the sky!

The Euro Bungee is always a big hit at the Border-Fest. See more pictures page 8
