The Don Patterson Memorial Golf Tournament

Stanstead Journal - - NEWS - Special collaboration Jan Draper North Hatley

OnAugust 16 Boundary Rotary had its annual golf tournament and mechoui. This event has been around for over twenty years and for golfers and non-golfers is a pleasant Sunday-afternoon activity.

Over the years changes have come about. Vegas-style scoring was introduced and the raffle has been replaced by a silent auction. Now there is a mechoui instead of lobster and steak.

For many years Dick Fletcher was the Golf Tournament Committee Chair and Don Patterson a member of the Committee. Dick and his wife Betty have recently moved to southern climes. Don passed away last winter.

To commemorate Don’s contribution to Rotary President Allan Smith suggested that we name the Golf Tournament in memory of Don. Golf Committee Chair Bill May and the rest of the club were in complete agreement and with this proposal. At last week’s tournament Aline Patterson and James and Tracey two of her children were present when Allan Smith re-named the golf tournament to honor Don’s dedicated service in Rotary.

Don was always a willing participant in every program and project Boundary undertook. Don was President in 2002-2003.

Don and Aline helped to keep the bookstore in good order and regularly attended the sales. Don was always at the annual Carnivals at Camp Massawippi. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Friendship Exchanges, when a group of Rotarians visit another district to stay with other Rotarians there. Don and Aline always opened their home to the Rotary visitors. (Note: This is not an official Rotary program and is funded by the Rotarians themselves).

Don was part of the projects Boundary has undertaken at Camp

Massawippi and Coutts Moriarty helping the camps with spring clean-up or small renovation and building projects. He was always part of the team that cleaned and renovated the blue bird houses on the bicycle trail.

Don was a member of the Vocational Scholarship Committee which gives scholarships on both sides of the border.

Don never took on a job with a frown. Always smiling and good humored, he embodied the Rotary spirit of service. Boundary hopes that the Don Patterson Memorial Golf Tournament will keep this spirit alive and well in our community.

A devoted member of the Golf tournament Committee.
