Stanstead Journal - - NEWS BRIEFS -

It is under the theme of “Solidarity” that Appui Estrie is highlighting National Caregivers Week which runs from November 1st to November 7th. With the goal of encouraging people to recognize the role of caregivers to seniors in Quebec society, a series of activities have been planned for the region, notably the presentation of a film and a play, conferences, a day of sensitizing, and the launch of a guide.

In 2013, we estimate that 85 % of care to seniors was provided by natural caregivers. With a growing, aging population, the existence of a strong support network for caregivers is quickly becoming crucial. According to a 2012 report published by the Institut de la statistique du Quebec, the proportion of people aged 65 and older in the Quebec population will increase from 16 % to 28 % by 2061.

In fact, in Quebec, more than a million people give their time, care and support, without getting paid, to a senior experiencing a loss of autonomy. In Estrie, it is estimated that about 45,000 people take that role. Natural caregivers are all around us and their actions deserve to be recognized by those around them.

Appui Estrie operates a Help line for caregivers at 1 855 852-7784. Resources for caregivers can also be found at www.lappuiestrie.org.
