Canada announces $100 million in funding to United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees

Stanstead Journal - - FROM PAGE ONE -

“Canada will continue to stand by the people of Syria and their neighbouring countries during this conflict. Along with our commitment to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada, our additional contribution to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees efforts will help the poorest and most vulnerable, and support those affected by times of crisis in fragile states.”

- The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie

On October 19th Canadians from all over the country made a choice. The riding of ComptonStanstead was not spared by the will of people for a change of direction than the one the conservative government had been for the last 9 last years. I would thus like to sincerely thank the citizens of the 35 municipalities, the districts of Rock-Forest/St-Élie/ Deauville, Lennoxville and of the former Canton d’Ascot; it is with pride and honor that I represented you at the House of Commons during the 41st Parliament. Compton-Stanstead is diversified economically and its labour force is more than able to accomplish the big challenges which will remain numerous in the next years. My role also gave me the opportunity to meet proud and resourceful individuals. I will miss you.

For the last 11 years I have been a militant for one cause, that of social democracy. I always believed in the virtue of respect of human rights, the eldery, the environment, gender equality and much more. A very special thank you goes to my wife Cynthia Rodrigue who held the fort during my long absences, to the Canadian legions, to the HUT 318 of Lennoxville, to the Weetchumpees, to Mr. André Nault and to Mrs. Nancy Layton; you were for me an unbounded inspiration. I unfortunately leave with unfinished work: the financ- ing of the Mont-Mégantic observatory, the state of railways, employment-insurance, border security, the safeguard of family farms, health programs for our veterans and much more.

However, the day has come to pass on the torch and for me to tackle new projects as well as professional objectives. I want to salute the numerous militants, volunteers of various small and special occasions, my team (Alain, Lucie, Valerie, Julie, Marilyn) as well as the 15,500 people who believed in me and in my party during the last electoral campaign; once again I thank you very much.
