Mem­phrem­a­gog MRC re­leases en­vi­ron­men­tal re­port

TheMem­phrem­a­gog MRC has drawn up a pos­i­tive re­port of its sus­tain­able de­vel­op­ment and en­vi­ron­men­tal ini­tia­tives for 2015. “The ac­tiv­i­ties that took place were re­lated to dif­fer­ent aspects of en­vi­ron­men­tal fol­low-up and pro­tec­tion, as well as rais­ing aware­ness in cit­i­zens,” said Lisette Maillé, the mayor of Austin and the pres­i­dent of the Comité con­sul­ta­tive en de­vel­oppe­ment durable (CCDD) of the MRC. “Th­ese ac­tiv­i­ties have al­lowed, among other things, to give our mu­nic­i­pal­i­ties tools to carry out con­crete ac­tions, no­tably on the pro­tec­tion of wa­ter­ways, and to ed­u­cate the pub­lic on dif­fer­ent is­sues.” In­for­ma­tion Kiosks For the fourth year in a row, a team of en­vi­ron­men­tal coun­sel­lors from the MRC took part in mu­nic­i­pal events with the aim of sen­si­tiz­ing and in­form­ing the pop­u­la­tion on sev­eral sub­jects re­lated to the en­vi­ron­ment and to the han­dling of house­hold wastes. Be­tween the months of May and Au­gust, the coun­sel­lors met more than 530 peo­ple at twelve dif­fer­ent events in eleven mu­nic­i­pal­i­ties. School Tours In the spring of 2015, the first cy­cle stu­dents of the Mon­te­sorri high school made three short films on im­por­tant top­ics to the MRC Mem­phrem­a­gog: the next gen­er­a­tion of farm­ers (La vie a la ferme); the han­dling of or­ganic mat­ter (Rien ne sert de crier); and the sus­tain­able de­vel­op­ment of the ter­ri­tory (Ma­gog 2025). Ac­com­pa­nied by Mathieu Drouin, pro­fes­sional film­maker, the stu­dents par­tic­i­pated in all aspects of the mak­ing of a short film. The videos can be viewed on YouTube. In the fall of 2015, dur­ing Que­bec’s waste re­duc­tion week (Se­maine Que­be­coise de re­duc­tion des dechets), 160 stu­dents from the La Ruche and Mon­te­sorri high schools were able to at­tend a con­fer­ence about the prob­lems of waste from elec­tronic equip­ment. Pre­sented by Uniterre, the aim of the con­fer­ence was to make this next gen­er­a­tion aware of the hu­man and en­vi­ron­men­tal con­se­quences re­lated to elec­tronic waste and to give them the means to change their be­hav­iours. Re­vi­sion of en­vi­ron­men­tal ac­tion plan On Septem­ber 15th, 2015, the MRC adopted its new Plan d’ac­tion quin­quen­nial en en­vi­ron­ment. The plan cov­ers six is­sues: pro­tect­ing the qual­ity of the en­vi­ron­ment; pro­tect­ing wa­ter qual­ity; pro­tect­ing biodi-
