Bishop’s University Set To Host U4 League For Action-Packed Up For Debate Weekend
From February 5th through the 7th 2016, Bishop's University will host the fourth annual Up for Debate, a weekend where members of the U4 League will examine this year’s theme: A Liberal Education Prepares U4 Global Citizenship.
Delegates from the U4 League – including students, faculty, and academic leaders from Acadia, Bishop’s, Mount Allison, and St. Francis Xavier universities – will spend the weekend exploring how higher education should provide a balanced and comprehensive experience that challenges our young people and prepares them for responsible, ethical, and sustainable leadership. The U4 schools are united in a shared vision that promotes social justice and human rights for all members of the community.
Packed with activities to suit every taste, the event promises to be stimulating and thoughtprovoking. Activities include:
A panel on human rights and social justice entitled Building Bridges on the Path to Global Citizenship;
A conference by Dennis Edney, Q.C. (Omar Khadr’s lawyer);
A student debate tournament in the Canadian Parliamentary style where Bishop’s hopes to defend the Jane Blaikie Cup;
A ‘‘Guess Who’’ game. Last year’s mystery guests included Thomas Mulcair, Hubert Lacroix, Robert Ghiz and Gladys Radek; The Quebec Model UN Symposium; and A Business CASE Competition. All four universities in the U4 League are dedicated to maintaining and enriching the quality of undergraduate education and to improve the overall experience offered to students through innovative, sustainable, and transformative action.
