Week to focus on men
The26th edition of National Suicide Prevention Week takes place between January 31st and February 6th this year and has as its theme “You are important to us. Suicide is not an option”. Suicide takes three victims a day in Quebec and devastates the lives of many more. People must join together in this fight and reinforce the human safety net around vulnerable people.
National Suicide Prevention Week in the Estrie
For this edition, JEVI Centre de prevention Suicide –Estrie wants to reach men in particular. The reason is simple: almost 80 % of suicide victims are male. We can’t wait for the call for help to come from the person in distress; suicide prevention is everybody’s business! If you are concerned about a man that you know, don’t hesitate to call the help line at 1 866 APPELLE (277-3553). “If there is a man in your entourage who needs help, that call could be the most important call of your life,” commented Marie-Eve Bernier, of JEVI.
During Prevention Week, many activities to raise awareness will be taking place, including the distribution of four hundred posters and two thousand pamphlets called “T’es important-e pour moi”.
And to reach men? A special poster for garages
With the slogan Ta batterie est a plat? (Is your battery dead?), this poster invites men to consult suicide prevention experts as they would an expert mechanic for their car! The posters will be sent to two hundred garages in the region. In connection to this, podcasts can be listened to at ENERGIE 106.1 FM and ROUGE FM, including a podcast created to reach agricultural producers.
More information about suicide prevention can be found on the Facebook page Semaine de prevention du suicide en Estrie, and at a special information kiosk which will be set up today at the CHUS HotelDieu, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, in the cafeteria.
