The26th edi­tion of Na­tional Sui­cide Preven­tion Week takes place be­tween Jan­uary 31st and Fe­bru­ary 6th this year and has as its theme “You are im­por­tant to us. Sui­cide is not an op­tion”. Sui­cide takes three vic­tims a day in Que­bec and dev­as­tates the lives of many more. Peo­ple must join to­gether in this fight and re­in­force the hu­man safety net around vul­ner­a­ble peo­ple.

Na­tional Sui­cide Preven­tion Week in the Estrie

For this edi­tion, JEVI Cen­tre de preven­tion Sui­cide –Estrie wants to reach men in par­tic­u­lar. The rea­son is sim­ple: al­most 80 % of sui­cide vic­tims are male. We can’t wait for the call for help to come from the per­son in dis­tress; sui­cide preven­tion is ev­ery­body’s busi­ness! If you are con­cerned about a man that you know, don’t hes­i­tate to call the help line at 1 866 AP­PELLE (277-3553). “If there is a man in your en­tourage who needs help, that call could be the most im­por­tant call of your life,” com­mented Marie-Eve Bernier, of JEVI.

Dur­ing Preven­tion Week, many ac­tiv­i­ties to raise aware­ness will be tak­ing place, in­clud­ing the dis­tri­bu­tion of four hun­dred posters and two thou­sand pam­phlets called “T’es im­por­tant-e pour moi”.

And to reach men? A spe­cial poster for garages

With the slo­gan Ta bat­terie est a plat? (Is your bat­tery dead?), this poster in­vites men to con­sult sui­cide preven­tion ex­perts as they would an ex­pert me­chanic for their car! The posters will be sent to two hun­dred garages in the re­gion. In con­nec­tion to this, pod­casts can be lis­tened to at EN­ERGIE 106.1 FM and ROUGE FM, in­clud­ing a pod­cast cre­ated to reach agri­cul­tural pro­duc­ers.
