Stanstead Journal - - NEWS - Sherbrooke, Lennoxville

Bishop’sUniversity’s John H. Price Sports and Recreation Centre received a $335,919.98 grant from Hydro-Québec under the company’s Energy Efficiency Programs.

This grant was awarded for energy efficiency measures implemented by Consortium exp/Cima’s team of professionals, in collaboration with the designers of the campus energy loop. Here are some of the project’s highlights: Heat recovery from refrigeration systems for the entire sports centre and for the regeneration of the campus energy loop; Dimmable LED lighting for the centre’s gymnasiums and arena; Creation of a microclimate for the arena stands through controlled ventilation intended to preserve

ice quality; Integration of the arena’s heating and ventilation control system into the campus central control system; Low voltage lighting control system; Implementation of a storm water detention system, and Connection to the campus geothermal network. “I want to salute the efforts of the entire Consortium exp/Cima team, which worked closely with our Buildings and Grounds team,” said Isabelle Goyette, Assistant Vice-Principal, Finance and Operations. “This is a large-scale project not only for our university, but also for the region. We are very proud of it.”

“We are pleased to see that our Energy Efficiency Programs helped build a modern arena, using a wide range of innovative measures,” summed up Anita Travieso, Hydro-Québec’s Manager – Business Programs and Advisory Services – Energy Use.

“The close collaboration between our team and Bishop’s University’s team allowed the implementation of innovative solutions designed to solve the project’s energy efficiency challenges, including a ventilation system for the stands, which, while being discrete and efficient, ensures spectator comfort and helps reduce heating costs,” stated Daniel Nappert, P. Eng., mechanical-electrical director at exp’s Sherbrooke office.

In 2014, Bishop’s University unveiled its geothermal heating system and astounding results: a 66% reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions as well as a saving of one million litres of drinkable water. In 2015, the opening of the sports centre resulted in an additional annual saving of 6 million litres.
