Minister Bibeau addresses Chamber of Commerce
Last Wednesday, Compton Stanstead MP and Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, Marie Claude Bibeau, addressed the Sherbrooke Chamber of Commerce at Bishop’s University.
“We are a government looking towards the future who believes in the need to invest now in the country’s economy, acting as a partner with the provinces, the territories and the municipalities. When we talk about economic development here, we think immediately of the Sherbrooke Airport or, should I say, ‘the airport for southern Quebec’… since this project is clearly identified as a priority for the seven MRC’s that are around it,” said the Minister. Minister Bibeau also spoke of transport safety, mentioning how $143 million had been dedicated to railway safety in the budget.
“Our government also believes in our youth, and that’s why we have invested in their future by multiplying opportunities for stages and jobs of your future employees.” This year, the budget for the Canada Summer Job Program has doubled, creating two hundred student jobs in the Compton-Stanstead riding. Two billion dollars has been allocated for a new Strategic Investment Fund for post-secondary establishments, bringing with it investment in the Université de Sherbrooke, and $800 million for innovative projects.
Trans-Pacific Partnership and Dairy Industry
“My numerous meetings with milk producers and their representatives have allowed me to understand how crucial, when it comes to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the question of dia-filtered milk is. The issue is extremely important for the survival of our family farms and the economy of our region, of Quebec, and of the country. But the issue is also very complex on a legal and commercial level. I assure you that the question of dia-filtered milk is a priority for our government. The rural caucus, of which I belong to along with about forty other Liberal deputies, always remind our colleagues and Ministers, with conviction, about the urgency of the situation.”
Minister Bibeau switched from French to English when she spoke about the challenges and needs of the local Anglophone community, “Two ambitious projects concerning Bishop’s University and Champlain College are currently under evaluation, and I am hopeful that there will soon be good news to share. And the $675 million investment in CBC/Radio-Canada announced in the budget will ensure we have access to high-quality programs and services in both of our official languages.”
The Compton-Stanstead MP finished her speech by addressing the issue of inequality and poverty, mentioning the New Horizons grants for seniors which will be announced soon and the lowering of income tax for the middle class, among other things.
