Stanstead Farmer’s Market begins season
The local Farmer’s Market opened its summer season on the beautiful grounds of Stanstead College on Sunday. “Our first day went very well,” said market committee member Harvey Stevens of Stevens Orchard. “Stanstead College has been very accommodating; they set a good example of community service by hosting the market,” he added.
“We saw some new faces, people from out of town and other areas.” Always a challenge to get more people to shop at the market, the Market’s committee has been busy preparing for this year’s season, focusing on the use of promotional tools. “We have a project in collaboration with the AMPQ and MAPAQ. We had a lot of postcards printed up with all the information for the local Farmer’s markets that people can just attach to their fridge,” said Mr. Stevens. The Stanstead Farmer’s Market is having good success with its Facebook page and it now appears on several other websites that ‘locavores’ use to find their shopping destinations. Another project the market is involved with will allow people with Smartphones to learn about the Stanstead Farmer’s Market, its location and opening hours. “Our goal is to not only bring new people to the market but also into the village. We're planning to have a table at the market with information about other things to do while in town,” said Mr. Stevens.
The Stanstead Farmer’s Market is open on Sundays, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, on the grounds of Stanstead College on Dufferin Street. Some of the products include fresh strawberries, honey, baked goods, smoked fish and handmade crafts. More fresh garden produce will begin appearing at the market in the coming weeks.
