Get ready to run in 15th annual 5KM

Stanstead Journal - - NEWS - Victoria Vanier

It’stime to get training for the annual 5 km Road Race which takes place on Saturday, July 9th, in Stanstead. Michael Sudlow, of Ogden, organizes this event which attracts runners from near and far who compete in one of sixteen categories for medals. The flat, scenic five kilometer course runs through historic Stanstead and along the recreational trail. “We keep the same course every year because many of the runners like to keep track of their time, see if they have improved from year to year,” said Mr. Sudlow.

Registration is between 8:00 am and 9:45 am, on the morning of the race, in the Stanstead College gymnasium on Dufferin Street. The race will begin half an hour later than it has in previous years, moving from 9:30 am to 10:00 am, and begins in front of the Stanstead Town Hall. “With the demise of the BorderFest, we no longer have to rush to clear the street of run- ners for the parade,” said Mr. Sudlow. “After they cheer them on at the start, spectators can see the runners when they reach the two kilometer mark just by taking Willow Street behind Sunnyside school in a short walk. There they can cheer on their friends and relatives again,” he added.

There are eight age categories ranging from 12 and under to 70 and over, and each of those is separated by male and female. As the race is described in its brochure, it is quite literally “A race for the whole family”. Medals go to the top three runners in each category while door prizes are generously supplied by Le Coureur Boutique, in Sherbrooke. Refreshments for the runners are supplied by Stanstead’s Les Marches Tradition. Last year’s event saw the biggest participation to date with 129 runners.
