Summer Time in The Village

Stanstead Journal - - NEWS - Special collaboration

Grace Village and Connaught Home welcomed the summer weather with delight as our Activities Team jumped right into preparing summer programming. Our Outdoor Clubs at Connaught & Grace Village began in June, gathering residents together in outdoor spaces around Massawippi Retirement Communities (MRC) to enjoy the natural settings and participate in social and active activities in the outdoors.

On July 1st, a beautiful sunny day in the Townships, residents of Grace Village were able to get outside to celebrate the national holiday and play basketball. Challenging themselves, residents participated in an adapted version of the popular game, while fellow residents, friends and volunteers cheered on from the sideline. Residents of Grace Village then enjoyed an indoor picnic, out of the mid-day heat, followed by their very own showing of the 2016 Hatley Canada Day Parade. Having been filmed earlier that day, residents were able to engage in the Eastern Townships event, reminiscing about the many years they spent as part of or watching the annual parade. Connaught Home celebrated the national holiday with a delicious BBQ meal followed by exceptional music from The Castaways. Well known to both homes, The Castaways are dedicated volunteers who continue to provide great musical experiences for our residents to enjoy.

Together, residents from Connaught and Grace Village convoyed out to the restaurant Maison du Verger in Compton, Quebec. Twenty-five residents, volunteers and staff relished in the scenic drive appreciating the strawberry fields, farmland and apple orchards along the way. Welcomed with warm smiles and excellent service, the staff of Maison du Verger provided yet another delightful meal and positive experience for our residents.

What does July bring in the Townships? Strawberries! Our annual Strawberry Social went off without a hitch again this year. Residents prized the taste of homemade biscuits, strawberries and whip cream while covered by the shade of a maple tree outside Grace Village.

Activities continued to roll out with each passing day as residents of both Connaught Home and Grace Village anticipated the Official Groundbreaking Ceremony to officially break ground on MRC’s project for renewal. The day of the official groundbreaking marked a historic day for MRC which our residents were able to share with the surrounding community. Residents of Grace and Connaught Home were invited to participate in an interactive musical experience performed by John and Pippa Hall. John and Pippa bring a fun and engaging atmosphere to the room with their humorous and memorable folk tunes. To finish off the program, Pippa gives it her all in a fast paced step dance, encouraging residents to sing and dance along. Promising to be back next summer, John and Pippa have challenged our residents to practice their chair step dancing to be performed for them next year. We have accepted the challenge!

Other regularly schedules activities continued on thanks to our dedicated volunteers including carpet bowling, card parties, music shows, bingo, animal visits and more!

As our summer days continue on into the month of August, activities at Connaught & Grace Village are sure to benefit from the warm weather ahead.
