Full House for Canton Stanstead meeting

Stanstead Journal - - NEWS - Victoria Vanier

Almost fifty residents attended Stanstead Township’s last council meeting, most there to voice their concerns about all the short term cottage and house rentals taking place. As in many other areas of the world, private renting of home properties is becoming more and more common on the territory of the municipality. “The residents want the municipality to intervene so our Inspector will be contacting those property owners who are doing this without a permit,” explained the Director General of the municipality, Josianne Hudon. Homeowners who rent out their property more than thirty-one days per year must have a special permit to do so.

Members of Memphremagog Conservation Inc. (MCI) worked with the municipality and some volunteers, on August 6th, around Fitch Bay and Parc Forand to remove Invasive Phragmites from those areas. Invasive Phragmites are plants that cause damage to biodiversity around lakes and in wetlands.

The old community centre, La Foumilliere, is finally coming down. It will be demolished in October and a new firehouse will be built on that site. Volunteer firefighters will begin visiting residences, this week, to check smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors as part of a fire prevention plan.
