Prov­ince may forcibly take Spring­bank land

Al­berta is look­ing at ex­pro­pri­at­ing more than 3,000 acres for the Spring­bank di­ver­sion and reser­voir with­out the en­vi­ron­men­tal ap­provals it would nor­mally need to con­struct the con­tro­ver­sial flood mit­i­ga­tion megapro­ject.

As the prov­ince strug­gles to get the $432-mil­lion dam built on the El­bow River up­stream of the city within the promised five-year time pe­riod, Trans­porta­tion Min­is­ter Brian Ma­son said he has asked the prov­ince’s lawyers to look at forcibly tak­ing land from re­luc­tant own­ers be­fore it has the re­quired green lights from fed­eral and pro­vin­cial reg­u­la­tors.
