Toronto Police bring in helicopter, marine unit to assist in search of a man who fell overboard near Scarborough Bluffs
Toronto police have called in the marine unit, coast guard and a helicopter from Trenton to assist in their search for a missing Toronto DJ who fell off a boat near Scarborough Bluffs Sunday night.
Police received a call at 9:44 p.m. on Sunday from a person on the boat who said his friend, a man in his 20s, had fallen overboard near Bluffer’s Park.
A man who said he is the victim’s uncle told reporters the missing boater is 27-yearold Partheepan Subramanium, an IT professional from Sri Lanka who also performs as DJ Brownsoul on the side.
The uncle has told reporters he helped raise the boy since he was 10 years old.
Police had searched the area of Lake Ontario near Bluffer’s Park Sunday night and resumed the search Monday morning. The search for Subramanium continued throughout the day, but as of Monday night, he had not been found.
Toronto police Const. Allyson Douglas-cook said the search operation has become extensive, with the marine unit, coast guard and a helicopter from Trenton being brought in to canvass the area along with Toronto police officers.
Pak Selvarajah, a friend of Subramanium who works with him in the wedding industry, said he wants to organize a search party himself.
“We still have hope, every single one of my friends in (the) wedding industry, we’re very close-knit,” he told media at the scene. “I’m going to try to get everybody to come to (Bluffer’s Park) sometime today and get a search party going, because the more the merrier. We still haven’t lost hope.”
An Instagram story, posted to an account believed to belong to DJ Brownsoul, showed him boating for a five-hour span in the late afternoon and evening Sunday.
A series of photos and videos shows the Toronto skyline at sunset, from the water. In another, he poses for a selfie on the boat, the CN tower in the distance; He is not seen wearing a life-jacket, just a red sweater.
The final photo and video show the Toronto skyline fading into the distance, the sun almost entirely set.
The sun set just before 9 p.m. Sunday. Police say they received the call, reporting a man overboard, about 45 minutes later.
