Prof. Lance Hornby’s daily look back on Buds history
The Chicago Blackhawks, who arrive here Monday, were the visiting team that opened and closed Maple Leaf Gardens with wins in 1931 and 1999. But they also had a history with the local franchise’s first home at Mutual St. Arena. The Hawks were the final opponent at Mutual St. Arena before it closed, March 19, 1931. Though Toronto won 8-2, the last goal was by Harold (Mush) March, who recorded the first goal in Gardens history the following November. March brought that puck back to the closing ceremony 68 years later.
