Quarterback is the most important position on the field. You probably knew that but in case you don’t agree, the movement on a select pair of games this week should validate the notion. When Houston QB Deshaun Watson was unexpectedly lost for the season after sustaining a torn ACL in practice this week, his Texans went from being a 13-point favourite to just a 6½-point choice over the visiting the Colts today. By comparison, it was thought that Dallas RB Ezekiel Elliott would begin serving his unresolved suspension this week and that had the Chiefs and Cowboys hovering around pick’em for most of the week. When it was announced that Dallas’ star player would be suiting up today, the ‘Boys jumped to a 2½-point pick ... A game that moved without injury influence saw the inconsistent Jaguars open as a 3½-point choice over the Bengals but the marketplace thought it to be too low, buying it up to a current price of Jacksonville -5½. The 4-3 Jags have not won or lost consecutive games this season having flip flopped victories and defeats. Jacksonville is off a win but they are 0-2 both straight up and against the spread (ATS) in two true home games (third ‘home’ game was in England) this season. As hosts, Jax has managed just eight covers in previous 25 times it has been home chalk … Who knows which two teams show up today when Atlanta visits Carolina? Both have been erratic and unreliable but the betting market seems to feel that Atlanta is the lessor liability as the Panthers opened as a 2-point pick before the Falcons suddenly were made favourite’s by the same two points. Carolina is 0-3 ATS at home this year while the Birds are on a current 0-4 skid versus the number and have covered just one of four road games this season. What caused the swing is anybody’s guess.
