DeRozan having a huge week
BROOKLYN — There were a few eyebrows raised when DeMar DeRozan did not get the Eastern Conference player of the month honours for December that went instead to LeBron James.
Well, with a game still to play in the first week of January you can pretty much hand DeRozan the first weekly honour of 2018.
Through three games he’s averaging 35.7 points a night, is shooting 55.7% from the field, 55% from behind the arc all while averaging six assists and two steals and 4.3 rebounds a night.
In short he has done it all this week.
Friday the Bucks were throwing two and sometimes a third defender at DeRozan to start the game and he calmly found the open man.
In the third quarter with Jonas Valanciunas going to work inside and putting together that other-worldly 20-point quarter, DeRozan got a little more space and put up as quiet a 14-point quarter as one could have.
It’s not like the extra attention surprised anyone in Toronto.
“They definitely weren’t going to come in and let him get 52 again and we knew that,” Casey said. “Right off the bat, they were doubleteaming, committing two to the ball and I thought he did a good job of passing it out.”
DeRozan didn’t play a second in the fourth quarter.
