Interview - Brett Lawrie
We catch up with the Toronto Blue Jays’ Brett Lawrie to discuss his inclusion on the cover of PlayStation exclusive base baller, MLB14: The Show.
To celebrate the launch of the awesome MLB 14: The Show on PlayStation 4 recently, we were invited along to check out the game and chat with Toronto Blue Jay Brett Lawrie. Not wanting to miss out on the chance to grill the second/third baseman on his gaming habits of and those of his fellow Blue Jays, we jumped right into it…
TSI: Are you a big gamer?
BL: Here and there... I’m not your average gamer, I guess you could say. I’ll play a little whenever I have spare time, nothing crazy though!
TSI: What was it like being approached to be on the front cover of the Canadian edition of MLB 14: The Show?
BL: It was definitely a very cool opportunity – I’m very appreciative of it and it’s awesome to be a part of it. I remember growing up playing Ken Griffey Jr. (Presents Major League Baseball) and (Ken Griffey Jr.’s) Slugfest and all those classic games, so having an opportunity to see where video games have come from then to now and seeing myself on the front cover is obviously very cool. The stuff they do in games now is unbelievable. You almost think you’re watching a real game!
TSI: What’s it like seeing yourself in a video game and having a bunch of people playing as you?
BL: It’s definitely a weird feeling, you know, especially when you’re playing the game as yourself. You’re playing the game in real life and then you turn on your PS4 and then you see yourself as a character; it’s a real change of pace, but it’s one of those where you don’t want to stop playing. It’s really cool and being on the cover is obviously a bonus. It’s a lot of fun to represent myself, the Blue Jays, Major League Baseball and PlayStation.
TSI: Are any of your Blue Jays teammates big gamers?
BL: There’s a bunch of guys who are really into gaming. Dioner Navarro plays a lot of FIFA; he’s a big time FIFA player who loves playing online. A lot of guys here play a lot of Call of Duty too. I’m not very good with that stuff, though, and I have a hard time sitting there for hours just playing against guys who kill me every two seconds [laughs]. When they’re playing I usually find something else to do. I love playing baseball on the PS4 though when I get the chance.
MLB14: The Show is out now only on Sony PlayStation 4, Sony Play Station 3 and Sony PlayStation Vita.
