GETTING STARTED DOMAIN AND HOSTING REGISTRATION
Your first step is deciding on the domain name you’d like to use. This is a decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly, and it’s something we’ll cover in more depth in a future issue, but the main thing is to keep it as short as possible, avoiding easily misspelled words and unnecessary number or hyphen/dash use.
You want people to be able to find your website easily, and to be able to tell their friends about it without tripping over awkward words or dashes.
Once you’ve picked the name, you need to decide whether you’d like to use a .com, .net, .org or .ca. In the past, these top level domains had a lot more significance to your website than they do now, so the choice is really up to you.
If you want to make it clear that you’re a proud Canadian, however, we recommend going with a .ca (just make sure someone else doesn’t already have the .com version, because that could lead to confusion in future).
Now it’s time to head over to TekSavvy’s domain registration page [click here] to make your purchase. Everything is clearly explained here, and you won’t run into any troublesome jargon along the way.
Congratulations! You now own your very own piece of the internet. Owning a domain is only part one of the process, however, now you need to get your web hosting set up so you can have somewhere for your awesome For the next step, make your way to TekSavvy’s web hosting registration page [click here] and decide what package is best for you. Since you’re only starting out, we recommend the $14.95 Family Hosting package, which offers you 100Gb per month of bandwidth, 10 email accounts, 500MB of storage and up to 2 databases (we’ll explain what they’re for later).
If you find that you’re close to exceeding your monthly bandwidth (which means you’re doing a great job – go you!) then you can always upgrade later.
Unless you know what you’re doing, we recommend you stick to the default settings on the Web Hosting Registration Form, if some of the things there look like gobbledygook, don’t worry, just concern yourself with selecting the package that’s right for you, entering the domain you’ve just purchased (make sure “None” is selected in the “Domain Registration Name” field) and entering an email account that’ll serve as your main access login – your existing personal email account is always a good idea here, just in case.
You can add firstname.lastname@example.org email accounts later, so you don’t panic just yet!
All done? Awesome! You’re now well on the way to dominating the interweb (hopefully)… although it’d be nice if we could get some information up there to share with people, right?
