NIN­TENDO MAY RE­MOVE RE­GION LOCK­ING FROM SYS­TEMS IN THE FU­TURE

In news that will surely de­light fans of Ja­panese games, Nin­tendo pres­i­dent Sa­toru Iwata told lis­ten­ers on a re­cent in­vestor call that the company might con­sider re­mov­ing its now- stan­dard prac­tice of re­gion lock­ing its hard­ware at some stage in the fu­ture. “The game business has a his­tory of tak­ing a very long time with lo­cal­iza­tion among other things. I f un­locked for the ben­e­fit of the cus­tomers, there may also be a ben­e­fit for us. While I can’t say to­day whether or not we in­tend to un­lock, it is one thing that we must con­sider look­ing to the fu­ture.”

It may not hap­pen soon, but it still sounds promis­ing!
