The 87th Academy Awards took place on Fe­bru­ary 22nd at the Dolby Theatre in Los An­ge­les, hosted by Neil Pa­trick Har­ris and, although it wasn’t ex­actly cel­e­brat­ing a smash hit year at box of­fices for Hol­ly­wood, it was nev­er­the­less as high pro­file and lav­ishly pro­duced a cer­e­mony as we

have come to ex­pect from one of the high­lights in the movie in­dus­try’s cal­en­dar.

This year’s cer­e­mony was all about the un­der­dog, in that the bulk of nom­i­na­tions came not for big bud­get, high pro­file of­fer­ings, but rather for more low- key, artis­tic ef­forts like Richard Lin­klater’s Boy­hood, Ale­jan­dro González Iñár­ritu’s Bird­man and Wes An­der­son’s The Grand Bu­dapest Ho­tel, but that shift in fo­cus might just be ex­actly what Hol­ly­wood needs right now, at a time where ill- ad­vised re­makes and se­quels, and big- bud­get, low- qual­ity ef­forts fill cinema
