I’d like to talk to you today about best practice for avoiding unpleasant surprises. The way that we all consume media is changing. Let’s take the juggernaut of the streaming world as the most visible example. Netflix has 57 million subscribers worldwide and by most accounts makes up 35 percent of all peak Internet traffic. That’s a lot of streaming, time shifting and binge watching. Consuming our media on demand and at our convenience has freed us from the broadcast schedule but it has also brought with it a few dangers. Whether you are browsing the web, tweeting or chatting at the water cooler there is a phrase in our vernacular that hints at our first danger. Spoilers! Spoilers are everywhere! Streaming, time shifting and bingeing have allowed for more of us to become fans of truly engaging entertainment but it also means there are thousands out there that are bent on sharing the details of the latest plot twist or turn without the courtesy of a spoiler alert. 87% of Canadian households are connected to the Internet today. An average connected home could potentially have two gaming consoles, a PC, two tablets, three smart phones, and two televisions all connected to the Internet. The odds are good that each of those devices can stream media and they all have a collective impact on your available usage. Avoid unpleasant surprises and double check that you are on the right Internet package for your family.
