Amherst says no to name change

A name change for Amherst won’t be hap­pen­ing, de­spite the bad deeds of its name­sake. Amherst coun­cil opted Sept. 18 to main­tain the town’s name, with Mayor Dr. David Ko­gon said it’s im­prac­ti­cal and costly to change the name be­cause of the ac­tions of Bri­tish gen­eral Jef­frey Amherst.

Pug­wash lauded

Pug­wash Com­mu­ni­ties in Bloom re­ceived a 5 Blooms – Sil­ver rat­ing and spe­cial men­tion for the 2017 Pug­wash, Our Com­mu­nity in Bloom Cal­en­dar dur­ing the Na­tional-In­ter­na­tional Sym­po­sium and Awards cer­e­mony Sept. 16 in Ot­tawa-Gatineau. Pug­wash also re­ceived an Out­stand­ing Achieve­ment Award for the Home Hard­ware Com­mu­nity In­volve­ment.

RCMP crash rekin­dles painful mem­o­ries

Last week’s tragic col­li­sion, that re­sulted in the death of Amherst RCMP of­fi­cer Const. Fran­cis Desch­enes, brought back painful mem­o­ries for an­other po­lice of­fi­cer. Paul Calder, who re­tired in 2009, sur­vived a sim­i­lar cross just out­side Amherst in Novem­ber 2001.
