Giving thanks never ends

The Amherst News - - RELIGION - By Rev. Charlotte Ross Christ Church, Amherst

Here we are the end of October and God continues to give us such beautiful autumn weather and the privilege of being able to enjoy the warm sun and the gorgeous fall colours just a little longer.

The Thanksgiving holiday weekend has left us three weeks ago but is that the end of our thanksgiving? I don’t think so and many of you will agree.

God is so good to each of us in so many ways. The opportunity of living in Nova Scotia where there is a more relaxed way of life, good air to breath, excellent water and farmland and woodlands a plenty. We need to be thankful.

But do we take the time to give thanks to God? The act of giving thanks to God is the acknowledgement of the gifts God has given each one of us.

The act of giving thanks is our response to God. Giving thanks keeps us in right relationship with God, because by it we practice again and again living into the reality that we are not the prime movers of our own lives. We are simply the respondents.

In these complicated times in our world and in our own personal life, it is not always easy to feel thankful and to show that thankfulness in the way each of us lives and responds to each other. But we need to give thanks to God for the many good things in our lives. Look around you, your friends and family, the laughter of children, the good produce that has been harvested, the beautiful sunsets and so many other opportunities for each of us to thank God.

Yes autumn is a time we naturally gravitate to be thankful, but all year, in everything we do, and say, our hymn of thanks in ordinary things, needs to be heard. Does this mean that we will never face difficult times, times of illness, loss of a loved one, breaking up of a marriage, loss of a job? Definitely not but giving thanks on a regular basis makes the difficult times of our lives more bearable and perhaps even more manageable.

Take that time. Give thanks to God and your life will be more complete.
