Mount Al­li­son Mu­sic en­sem­bles present Mu­sic of the Giants and Wind Band Favourites

On Thursday, Nov. 30 and Fri­day, Dec.1, Mount Al­li­son Mu­sic en­sem­bles will present a pair of con­certs in Con­vo­ca­tion Hall un­der the di­rec­tion of Dr. Gre­gory Bur­ton.

At 8 p.m. on Nov. 30, the 42-mem­ber Mount Al­li­son Univer­sity Cham­ber Or­ches­tra will per­form Mu­sic of the Giants, a se­ries of stun­ning works by some of the most cel­e­brated clas­si­cal com­posers.

The per­for­mance will open with the over­ture to Mozart’s opera La clemenza di Tito, fol­lowed by works for or­ches­tra by Bartók, Villa-Lo­bos, and Jenk­ins.

The first half of the pro­gramme also in­cludes Beethoven’s beau­ti­ful Ro­mance in F Ma­jor for Vi­olin and Or­ches­tra, fea­tur­ing Mount Al­li­son vi­o­lin­ist Sannu Lawt.

The sec­ond por­tion of the con­cert ex­plores the mu­sic of Gus­tav Mahler. Ex­cerpts from the 2nd and 3rd Sym­phonies will be per­formed along with Mahler’s Rück­ert Lieder, fea­tur­ing Dr. Vicki St. Pierre as con­tralto soloist.

On Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m., the Mount Al­li­son Sym­phonic Band presents Wind Band Favourites, con­clud­ing the fall term with a per­for­mance of time­less works for wind band.

Mu­sic of Holst, Wag­ner, Strauss, De­bussy, and Bach will be jux­ta­posed with works by con­tem­po­rary com­posers, blend­ing the classics with the cut­ting edge.

Orig­i­nal mu­sic for winds, along with im­por­tant tran­scrip­tions for the wind ensem­ble, will high­light the many tal­ented wood­wind, brass, and per­cus­sion stu­dents at the Mount Al­li­son Mu­sic De­part­ment.
