Sus­pi­cious re de­stroys shed on South Al­bion Street

Amherst re o cials are in­ves­ti­gat­ing what could be the sec­ond sus­pi­cious re in a week.

Mem­bers of the Amherst Fire Depart­ment were called to a South Al­bion Street ad­dress early Mon­day morn­ing to put out a re that de­stroyed a shed be­hind the Bar­rell Laun­dro­mat.

“At this point the re is still un­der investigation, but it is a sus­pi­cious re,” chief Greg Jones said later Mon­day.

Jones said a neigh­bour no­ticed the re at ap­prox­i­mately 3:35 a.m. and alerted the re depart­ment.

Po­lice were also in the area and also called the re in. It didn’t take long to put the re out, but not be­fore dam­age was caused to the back of the build­ing hous­ing Con­nor’s Fam­ily Res­tau­rant and Fred­die’s Pizze­ria.

On Nov. 23, re­fight­ers were called to a va­cant home on East Pleas­ant Street to ex­tin­guish another re.

Jones said that fire is also un­der investigation by the pro­vin­cial re mar­shal’s o ce.
