Wabush gear­ing up for 50th an­niver­sary cel­e­bra­tions next year

Plans are un­der­way for a week of cel­e­bra­tions as the Town of Wabush hosts its 50th An­niver­sary and Come Home Year next year.

The cel­e­bra­tions are set for July 22 to 29, 2017.

The town’s di­rec­tor of plan­ning and land use, Me­lanie LaFosse, said the week will be filled with events for peo­ple of all ages. Ac­tiv­i­ties in­clude ev­ery­thing from a church ser­vice to a din­ner the­atre; from swim­ming to yoga; from sport­ing tour­na­ments to Bingo games.

There will also be a spe­cial break­fast for se­niors, LaFosse said, as well as other ac­tiv­i­ties through­out the week.

Plan­ning for the week-long event be­gan in Jan­uary, she said, and nu­mer­ous fundrais­ers have al­ready taken place.

“Just this past week­end (July 16) we had our duck race and we raised $3,500 for the Wabush 50th an­niver­sary com­mit­tee,” LaFosse said.

Funds were also raised dur­ing Canada Day cel­e­bra­tions, she said, and from jail-and-bail in June.

“Next year we are look­ing at do­ing the jail-and-bail and the duck race again while peo­ple are ac­tu­ally here (dur­ing the cel­e­bra­tions),” she said.

An­other pop­u­lar fundraiser – Chase the Ace - will get un­der­way in Au­gust, LaFosse said.
