Schools are ready for another year of classes in Labrador West
For many in Labrador West the thought of school opening this week has them shaking their head in disbelief.
“It seems like only yesterday when students were leaving for their long summer break,” one mother told the Aurora as she did some last minute shopping for school supplies.
This year students’ first day back is Wednesday Sept. 6 and will see the same start and end times as last year at their schools.
If you have forgotten those times, or recently moved to the area, they are:
A P Low Primary, classes start 8:15 a.m. Doors open 8:05 a.m.; classes end 2:10 p.m.
JR Smallwood middle school, classes start 8:15 a.m. and end 2:20 p.m.
Menihek High School, homeroom classes start 9:05 a.m. and last period end 3:20 p.m.
(Note: The French school Centre Educatif L’envol will follow the same holiday schedule as English schools. Class start and finish times were not available when we checked online).
Of course, one of the first questions asked is: when are the breaks?
This year’s Christmas break is from Dec. 22; resuming Jan. 8.
Mid-winter break is Feb. 16 to the 19.
Easter is from March 29 and resumes April 9.
Students also get Thanksgiving and Remembrance Day holidays as well.
And, of course, June 28th 2018 is the last day of classes for students.
As students head back to class motorists are reminded to slow done in school zones and to follow the 20 km speed limit between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Sgt. Nick Rumbolt of the Labrador West detachment of the RNC says detachment members will be out on patrol in school areas.
“Our priority is to ensure the safety of students,” he told the Aurora.
Rumbolt also says be cautious around school buses as they pick up and drop off students.
“It is illegal to pass a school bus when the stop signs are out and the red lights are flashing,” he reminds drivers. “Let’s make sure the many students in Wabush and Labrador City have a safe return as they begin the 2017-2018 school year.”
Menihek High School, one of four schools in Labrador West, that opens again this week.
New playground equipment will welcome students of AP Low primary.
