Labrador West memorial soccer tourney celebrates a significant milestone.

Aubrey Pike was a founding father of soccer in Labrador West. He brought his passion for the game and his skills to Labrador City many years ago. Pike, like so many others, played soccer on the provinces Burin peninsula, an area famous for producing some of the province’s finest soccer players.

From those humble beginnings, the Labrador West Minor Soccer League has grown into a very successful organization that has seen quite a number of its young players move on to become members of provincial teams. Pike passed away more than 15 years ago, but a year after his passing his family decided to hold a soccer tournament in his honour.

“It was a way of keeping his memory alive, and to acknowledge his love of the sport and his contributions to it,” Pikes wife Gail told the Aurora.

The tournament became an annual event and is organized and run by the Labrador West Minor Soccer Association. On Sept. 4, members of the association took part in the 15th annual Aubrey Pike Memorial Soccer Tournament with a series of games throughout the day and awards were presented after the individual games.

After the final game of the day, which was the U16 and U14 group, a ceremony was held to thank the many sponsors who help the association. A special celebration was held for some of the older players who were leaving the league. They were presented with personalized jerseys.

Reuben Hillier, a longtime friend of Pike, spoke of Pike and his contributions to soccer to the assembled crowd. Then the Aubrey Pike award was presented to Amanda Daniels by Gail Pike, Aubrey’s wife. It goes to the soccer player who shows dedication, passion and love for the game of soccer.

“I am very pleased and honoured to be given this award,” Daniels told the Aurora.

Also on hand for the presentation was Pike’s son Kirk, grandchildren Reggie and Gracie Pike, and daughter-in-law Gloria, all of whom are avid soccer players.

The tournament marks the end of the outdoor soccer season for the Labrador West Minor Soccer Association.
