A well-known Happy Valley-Goose Bay man was just appointed to the board of directors for Nalcor Energy.

Geoff Goodyear was appointed to the board on Sept. 25 and said he’s excited about the opportunity.

“It’s exciting and with that comes mixed feelings, of course,” he told the Labradorian. “First off, spending time with the group that makes up the board. If you look at the bios there’s an amazing group of very accomplished people who sit on that board so it’s going to be very exciting and interesting to spend time with them and be part of that process.”

Goodyear is no slouch himself when it comes to accomplishments, having recently retired as the president and CEO of Universal Helicopters. He has also been the chairman of the Helicopter Association of Canada and the NavCanada Advisory Committee, is the co-founder of the Labrador Peregrine Falcon Monitoring Program, sits on the boards of the Labrador North Chamber of Commerce and the Battle Harbour Historic Trust, is an honorarycColonel for 5 Wing Goose Bay and is president of the Happy Valley-Goose Bay Rotary Club.

“Nalcor Energy’s board of directors plays the important role of overseeing the Crown Corporation’s operations,” said Siobhan Coady, minister of Natural Resources in a press release. “Collectively, the board brings experience and competency in such areas as corporate governance, audit, finance, law and business management. Mr. Goodyear’s appointment will complement existing skills while ensuring that representation is in place for Labrador. I thank Mr. Goodyear for taking on this role and wish him success during his tenure.”

Goodyear said as a resident of Labrador he’s thrilled to be there and understand the sensitivity surrounding the Muskrat Falls project, but stressed Nalcor is about more than just Muskrat Falls.

“They also deal with the offshore planning and government’s participation in the offshore is through Nalcor so there’s lots to do,” he said. “I’m sure there’s a varied number of topics which include Muskrat Falls but a lot of other issues as well.”
