Lor­raine Michael named in­terim NDP leader

The provin­cial NDP ex­ec­u­tive has named Lor­raine Michael, MHA for St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi, in­terim leader of the NDP.

Michael ac­cepted the role, a news re­lease from the party stated.

Michael has been an ac­tive mem­ber of the NDP since the 1970s. She was elected leader of the provin­cial NDP in May 2006 and elected MHA for Sig­nal Hill-Quidi Vidi in Novem­ber 2006, re-elected in 2007 and 2011, and most re­cently elected as the MHA for the new dis­trict of St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi in Novem­ber 2015. Michael served as leader of the provin­cial NDP from 2006-15.

Earle McCurdy was elected leader of the NDP in March 2015. McCurdy had an­nounced he is step­ping down as leader as of the end of Septem­ber. Michael will serve as in­terim leader un­til a new leader is in place.

“We’re for­tu­nate to have some­one with her par­lia­men­tary and lead­er­ship ex­pe­ri­ence to lead the party as we go through the demo­cratic process of elect­ing a new leader,” NDP pres­i­dent Mark Gruchy stated in the re­lease.

The provin­cial NDP ex­ec­u­tive said it has es­tab­lished a lead­er­ship con­ven­tion plan­ning com­mit­tee to work on com­mu­ni­ca­tions, pro­ce­dures and other mat­ters re­lated to prepa­ra­tion for the con­ven­tion.
