Local group bring home medals

An At­lantic Canada Tae Kwon Do com­pe­ti­tion was re­cently held in Stephenville.

The Tae Kwon Do or­ga­ni­za­tion from Labrador West had five com­peti­tors from its ranks at­tend the New­found­land and Labrador Chong Lee Cup com­pe­ti­tion re­cently.

The event was hosted by Mas­ter Dwayne Rus­sell and the Stephenville Tae Kwon Do Club.

There were a to­tal of 90 par­tic­i­pants com­pet­ing from Labrador West, Spa­niards Bay, Cor­ner Brook, Hal­i­fax and Stephenville.

Labrador West ath­letes par­tic­i­pated in forms and spar­ing, mea­sured at belt level and age clas­si­fi­ca­tion. All par­tic­i­pants from Labrador West brought home medals. There were five par­tic­i­pants from the local or­ga­ni­za­tion: Danielle Penny, a se­nior black belt com­peti­tor, won gold in form.

■ In the Ju­nior Black Belt cat­e­gory, Me­gan Tem­ple, Derek Gosse and Josh Grant­ner all won gold in spar­ing.

■ Tem­ple and Gosse also each won a bronze in form.

■ Ju­nior green belt ath­lete Xan­der Dil­lon won a silver in spar­ing and a bronze in form.

The local Tae Kwon Do or­ga­ni­za­tion is cel­e­brat­ing its 10th year in Labrador West and has many rea­sons to be proud. This or­ga­ni­za­tion is a non-profit en­tity and is fly­ing on the wings of the never end­ing com­mit­ment of its vol­un­teers.

This or­ga­ni­za­tion, headed by Mas­ter Harry Cormier and the many vol­un­teers who give un­con­di­tion­ally of their time and ex­per­tise, can hold their heads high in a job — once again — well done.
