Spirit Catcher awards cer­e­mony tonight

The Or­der of the Spirit Catcher Awards will be handed out this evening at Bar­rie’s Southshore Cen­tre.

Erica Cur­tis is this year’s re­cip­i­ent of the Or­der of the Spirit catcher. She is a re­tired nurse who has de­voted her free time to vol­un­teer­ing for Parkin­son

Canada, as well as for Hospice Sim­coe, Royal Vic­to­ria Re­gional Health Cen­tre, Epilepsy Canada and ear­lier in her life was on the YMCA and a Cana­dian men­tal­health board of direc­tors.

Zachary Hofer is the win­ner of the Youth Spirit Catcher Award. The 13-year-old boy ded­i­cated his year to help­ing chil­dren with men­tal­health con­cerns by jog­ging, bik­ing and scooter­ing 465 kilo­me­tres across On­tario.

Hofer has raised $82,686 for

RVH’s new men­tal-health ward for youth.

The Or­der of the Spirit Catcher awards were es­tab­lished in 2000, the high­est awards given to vol­un­teers for out­stand­ing ser­vice to the com­mu­nity.

Bar­rie city coun­cil will rec­og­nize Cur­tis and Hof­fer at its Nov. 20 meet­ing.
