Rus­sell, Suzuki win sil­ver

DAW­SON CREEK, B.C. (STAFF) — Bar­rie Colts rookie Nick Suzuki and Bar­rie na­tive Mitchell Rus­sell won a sil­ver medal to­gether with Team Canada Red on Satur­day at the World Un­der-17 Hockey Chal­lenge.

Team Canada Red fell 6-4 to the United States in the gold-medal game.

The Amer­i­cans opened up a five-goal lead less than 22 min­utes in be­fore Red be­gan to chip away. Nick Wong, who plays for the OHL’s Oshawa Gen­er­als, got the come­back started, Bowen Byram scored on the power play and Alexis Lafrenière redi­rected a feed to make it a 5-3 game af­ter 40 min­utes. An empty-net goal late in the third pe­riod clinched the gold medal for the U.S. be­fore Suzuki added one more to the Cana­dian to­tal in the fi­nal minute.

Suzuki fin­ished the tour­na­ment with seven points (3G, 4A) in six games, while Rus­sell, a for­ward with the Owen Sound At­tack, had a goal and an as­sist.
